ABOUT SHEEPSKINS & BREEDS

ABOUT SHEEPSKIN RUGS

The various types of sheepskins in our shop have other characteristics- apart from the obvious difference in appearance- which you might want to consider before deciding. Some sheepskin rugs will require more daily care than others to stay soft and fluffy. Some sheepskins will work great on a chair or couch, but may not work quite as well as a rug on the floor.

GOTLAND SHEEPSKIN

With their silky grey curls Gotland skin are considered by many to be the most desirable sheepskins.
The Gotland sheep is almost exclusively bred in Sweden, and since there are not many sheepfarmers left, the skins are very rare. For this reason we have quite large seasonal variation in our stock, with Christmas and summer being the lowest.

ANIMAL WELFARE
The Gotland sheepskin in our shop come from passionate and knowledgable breeders whom we know personally, so we can promise you that our sheepskins come from sheep that have led safe and happy sheep-lives

CLEAN, NATURAL AND SUSTAINABLE
All skins have their natural color and shape. They have been tanned using the gentlest methods available in adherence with the strict Swedish environmental legislation.

PRACTICAL CONSIDERATIONS
Due to the smooth surface of the individual hairs in the fur, Gotland sheepskins will not felt or become matted – even after many years of everyday use. They keep up very well in homes with children and pets, and are a good choice for dining room chairs or as area rugs. A good shake once a week will keep them looking nice and shiny for many years.
The Gotland sheepskins are quite soft and subtle, and will drape very well on furniture. If you want to use the skin as an area rug you may want to consider adding a non-slip rug pad.

ICELANDIC SHEEPSKINS

THE WILD ICELANDIC SHEEP
Icelandic sheep are one of the oldest and purest breeds of domestic sheep in the world.
The double layered fleece and great color variety makes for an uniquely wild and luxurious appearance – as well as a highly addictive softness.

ANIMAL WELFARE
The Icelandic sheepskin in our shop come directly from Iceland, where the sheep spend their lives roaming free in the mountains – as they have done throughout the ages.

CLEAN, NATURAL AND SUSTAINABLE
All skins have their natural color and shape. They have been tanned using the gentlest methods available and the process is powered by the renewable water energy sources that are unique to Iceland.

PRACTICAL CONSIDERATIONS
Due to the long shaggy fur Icelandic Sheepskins must be shaken out and combed with your fingers frequently (once a week)to keep the wonderful fluffy look. If you don’t mind this they will work well in homes with children and pets The skins are often quite voluminous and may look a bit overpowering on smaller pieces of furniture. So you should take care not to get a skin that is too large.
